On January 15, 2015, CIM Toronto Branch and MES hosted their Student Day. This is the 5th year in which we have hosted this event, which allows industry participants to share their experiences with students, and to provide insights on a range of careers and current issues affecting the mineral industry. The event was attended by over 30 undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of departments at five universities.
We had speakers from LDSA, Roscoe Postle Associates, Vale, RBC Capital Markets, and Responsible Mineral Development, who addressed valuation of mineral projects and mining companies, and practical considerations in the implementation of CSR. In addition, they discussed their varied backgrounds and, sometimes surprising, paths to a career in this industry. The Networking Seminar provided valuable tips on building a network, preparing to meet prospective employers, and using social media effectively. Thanks to the Manager of the Student Program at PDAC, students learned how to make the most of their time at the upcoming convention in March.
Many of our Student Day attendees were able to put the advice on networking into practice at the Students Meet Industry Luncheon hosted by the CIM Toronto Branch immediately following our morning presentations. We appreciate the generous sponsors of our 2015 Student Day and Luncheon – Borden Ladner Gervais, Agnico-Eagle Mines, Hudbay Minerals, Resource Capital Funds, the PDAC, Barrick Gold, Stantec, and Ernst and Young.”
