CIM MES Vancouver is pleased to present:
Knud Sinding, PhD
Associate Professor at University of Southern Denmark
who will deliver a presentation on:
Under the Surface: Management Performance in Mining Companies
Abstract: What do we really know about how well the leaders of mining companies are at doing their job? The answer is that we probably know less than we would like and that there are fundamental difficulties associated with finding out more.
Whether we are current shareholders, potential investors, partners, suppliers, regulators or any of the other external stakeholders (NGOs and the like, of all stripes), we all want to know how well a company is doing. If we knew we could decide to sell or buy shares, do business with or try to gain support from the company in question. We can look at the accounting results but these only tell us what happened last period but not why. We really have only a foggy idea about the contribution made by managers. We may feel that a mining company with mining assets that on paper appears to be barely breaking even is more focused on cost than one that has lots of high grade ore in the ground.
This seminar is designed to let the academics learn from what the practitioners are doing. To this end we have created a handful of simple questions that we have asked important people to comment upon at the seminar. Our quest is to understand how key business stakeholders look at the management work performed by the mining companies. Basically we are asking these stakeholders to reveal how they assess management quality in mining companies. However, we are not only looking for a handful of standard presentations but for a frank and open discussion of what participants see as the main challenges of assessing managerial competencies in mining companies. We think this is a fairly uncharted territory.
BIO: The seminar will be introduced and moderated by Dr. Knud Sinding, who is a visiting professor at the Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at UBC. Dr. Sinding obtained his PhD in mineral economics from UBC in 1994 and has been on staff at Imperial College, Dundee University, Aarhus University and the University of Southern Denmark.
His work as an academic and a consultant spans several fields and disciplines, from business economics, strategy and organisation through resources, minerals and environment, to origins in the science of geology. He uses his insights into the workings of the mining industry and mineral policy as the framework in which he can pursue his current interest in Corporate Social Responsibility.
