CIM MES is delighted to announce that the 2019 MES-COSMO Scholarship recipient is Simon Lacoste-Bouchet.
Simon Lacoste-Bouchet is a 4th year student in the Department of Mining Engineering at McGill University. Simon started his studies in 2014, and added a minor in mathematics in winter 2016. The minor focuses on courses in analysis, probability and stochastic processes. During his time at McGill, he has worked in many locations across Canada. These roles include short-range planning at Canadian Natural Resources Inc., Stornoway Diamond Corporation, and Red Lake Gold Mines. He is currently working at Canadian Royalties in the surveying department. In addition to roles in industry, Simon was a research assistant at McGill studying applications of mathematical programming to mine planning problems.
Simon is planning to graduate in the winter of 2020. For his final year, he will be captain of McGill’s Canadian Mining Games team and he will complete his capstone project. The capstone project will incorporate simulations of underground development tasks in order to forecast development rates and completion times. Simulating development allows the forecast model to accommodate for uncertainty in mine advance rates and a better understanding of the risk associated with mine activity scheduling.
The CIM MES-COSMO Scholarship: The Management & Economics Society (MES) of CIM together with the COSMO Mining Industry Consortium (AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., Barrick Gold Corp., BHP Billiton Ltd., De Beers Group of Companies, IAMGOLD Corp., Kinross Gold Corp., Newmont Mining Corp., Vale SA) established the CIM MES – COSMO Scholarship (“scholarship”) that is valued at CAD $3,000 per year. The scholarship is intended to provide financial support for mining engineering undergraduate students who are enrolled in Canadian universities, and have a focus on strategic mine planning optimization under uncertainty and related technical risk management.
