CIM MES Vancouver is pleased to present:

Mauro Chiesa

Semi-Retired Professional Financier and Advisor

who will deliver a panel discussion on:

So You Want to Finance a Gold Mine

The financial markets have changed radically with the FAAMAs (Facebook, Alphabet, Microsoft, etc) now commanding a market cap of US$4.3 trillion; or about 2.5 Canadas. These shares reflect both the need for growth and for dividends, as they are now retirement funds whose retirees are living longer, hence the need for liquidity AND risk aversion. A mine is getting harder to find, and when found, is technically a financial annuity for the Life of Mine (LOM), and faces increasing costs as the holes get deeper and the LOM shrinks. The mine, as an investment, must therefore alter its product and its message and its risk. The mining industry has also had a problematic past, with many funds abandoning the sector, and the mining company must make amends to mitigate any further concerns. This requires a complete rethink of how a mining company can approach either a financial market, both private and/or public, and, yes, current examples will be provided. An article in the Aug. 19, 2019 CIM, will also help in this regard. Join Mauro for an active afternoon discussion on these topics.

Biography:

Mauro is a semi-retired professional financier and advisor, specialising in mining and infrastructure projects. Mauro’s background is varied: he started with EDC in Ottawa for four years, worked in NYC for twelve years with two merchant banks and then 10 years with the World Bank Group, just after the Iron Curtain fell. His varied career has seen three LNG projects, numerous power projects (mostly IPPs), numerous mining projects in various stages of development and joint-venture petrochemical projects. Mauro continues to dabble on the advisory side as the capital markets have changed radically, and projects are far fewer. Mauro has a BA and MBA from UBC, has done upgrading work at Wharton and is tri-lingual.
