For its Wednesday, October 5, 2022 Discussion Group seminar, CIM’s Management and Economics Society, as part of its quarterly Perspectives & Insights on Metals and Mines series, is pleased to welcome:
Mauro Chiesa
Adviser (of EDC, NYC Banks, and World Bank fame)
who will deliver an online presentation on:
Mining and the Need for Capital
Abstract: The presentation will focus on the three changes underway including: 1) the mining industry as it focuses on green metals and ESG at the same time, but is not finding new mines, 2) the capital markets and their increasing need for dividends and risk avoidance, and 3) the mining company that now finds itself in need of both, a mine and capital, but discovers that cannot act like it did in the past. Should anyone wonder why the consolidation of the last five years, you need to go no further.
The presentation will focus on all three above aspects as all three are in a state of change. And all three must be adapted to, or else the capital will simply go elsewhere, namely the FAAMA-five which now pays dividends and offer growth to market caps of over US$8Tn, or 4 Canadian annual GDPs. Mining companies, by comparison, offer relatively higher risk and Life-of-Mine limitations. The presentation will then focus on some seven traits currently observed in Canadian mining companies and will highlight the flaws in these seven approaches. The names of the companies will remain anonymous and confidential.
There will be ample time for subsequent questions and, hopefully, answers.
