CIM MES is delighted to announce that the 2025 MES-COSMO Scholarship recipient is Gabriel Demers.
Gabriel Demers is a final year Mining Engineering student at the University of British Columbia also pursuing a minor in commerce. He has gained a wide variety of experience through co-ops and internships, including exploration, sand pit and quarries closure regulations, mineral processing, open pit and underground mining operations, designs, and planning. Gabriel has also been highly involved in the UBC Mining Department throughout his degree. This year, he is a key part of the UBC Mine Rescue, Canadian Mining Games, International Mining Games, and Goodman Gold Challenge teams, in addition to being the UBC Mining Undergraduate Society (MUGS) President.
Gabriel’s end-of-degree project evaluates the feasibility and trade-offs between electric, hybrid, and diesel underground equipment. A discrete event simulation software was used to compare productivity, energy consumption, efficiency, and emissions from each equipment evaluated. The study also includes an economical analysis, ventilation requirements analysis, and power requirements analysis.
The CIM MES-COSMO Scholarship: The Management & Economics Society (MES) of CIM together with the COSMO Mining Industry Consortium (AngloGold Ashanti Ltd., Anglo American plc, BHP, De Beers Group, IAMGOLD Corp., Kinross Gold Corp., Newmont Corp., Vale SA) established the CIM MES – COSMO Scholarship (“scholarship”) that is valued at CAD $4,000 per year. The scholarship is intended to provide financial support for mining engineering undergraduate students who are enrolled in Canadian universities and have a focus on strategic mine planning optimisation under uncertainty and related technical risk management.
