For its Wednesday, February 23, 2022 meeting, CIM’s Management and Economics Society is pleased to welcome:

Jeff Plate, B.Sc. (Geophysics), MA (Economics), CFA, P.Geo.

CEO, Interstellar Mining

who will deliver an online presentation on:

New Frontiers in Mining — A Primer on Lunar Mining

Abstract: For many, space mining seems like a galaxy far, far away. Due to dramatic changes in technology, economics and the politics of the new space race, space mining is now both economically and technically viable. In this session, a high-level review of the market condition changes will demonstrate the feasibility of lunar mining in the present.

A review of the Artemis missions and Commercial Lunar Payload Systems (CLPs) programs which have dramatically increased funding for commercialization of space, a requirement for private-public partnerships, and current technological. In addition, the renewed space race between China and the US is driving engagement by the Americans. Finally, standardized technology and reusable rockets have upended the costs for launch services. This backdrop is necessary to understand why the economics have changed and actual markets for space resources have developed.

Understanding lunar mining operations requires a retraining of the mindset of Earth based professionals. The Moon is not Earth so the existing technologies and methods are not applicable in this environment. A review of the operating environment and proposed mining plus processing methods is required to understand the market.

As ESG concerns are extremely important to both miners and society, sustainability of operations will be reviewed in light of the unique operating environment.

Finally, a summary of cislunar economics will be presented along with proposed capital costs and operating costs for a small lunar mining operation.
