Mineral Project Valuation in Securities Regulation: Why, When, and How?
Abstract: While the mineral industry knows it’s commonplace for regulatory agencies and exchanges to require company disclosure to meet reporting codes like CIM and JORC, the rules around disclosing valuations – and their alter ego, evaluations – are not as uniform. This talk is an introduction to the reasons valuations and evaluations might be required by securities legislation or exchange rules, to the distinctions between the two, and to the interplay between the market rules and valuation standards like CIMVal.
BIO: James Whyte is Senior Geologist in the Corporate Finance Branch of the Ontario Securities Commission, where he reviews mineral project disclosures by companies in the Canadian capital markets. He is a geochemist by training and a bushrat by heritage, and before joining the OSC worked as a newshound and as a consultant in the mineral exploration, geotechnical, and environmental fields.
