Toward Better Decisions to Act in a Dynamic Resource World – Using the Cynefin Framework

Since the introduction of the internet and the world-wide web, the pace of technology innovation and change has accelerated. In response, the mining world has started a push for innovation and digitization that is becoming widely adopted. However, social innovation to support people and their decisions through such change is lagging far behind – despite being key to adoption of such new methods.
As a result, an emerging vital skill for everyone in the industry is systems intelligence – to become aware of and understand the changing context in which we need to make decisions. This presentation will introduce the Cynefin Framework, a conceptual framework first developed in the early 2000’s by David Snowden of Cognitive-Edge®, during his past work in IBM Knowledge Management. It is a “sense-making” tool that is grounded in systems theory, complexity theory and several sciences, to help managers, policy-makers and others reach decisions.
The elements of the Framework will be introduced, as well as several examples of its application in current safety practices. Opportunities for use in mineral exploration and policy related to mining will be discussed. The framework, together with other Cognitive-Edge tools is currently being used worldwide in many sectors: IT, government policy, health care, military, social innovation in communities and on UN initiatives. In each case, better decisions to act, help strengthen robustness while building resilience for people and businesses alike, in a fast-changing world.
Biography:
Janice Fingler has been involved in mineral exploration for over thirty years, as a professional geoscientist (P.Geo, APEGBC), project manager (PMP), and executive. Her adaptive experience includes more than 175 months of field work across Canada and internationally. She is known as a pioneer as a woman leading projects and working underground in Latin America, to more recently as the first explorer to complete CIM’s Leading in Mining program.
In continuing her passion for supporting explorers on the ground, she served as volunteer Chair of AME’s Environment, Health and Safety committee for five years and was recently honoured as recipient of AME’s Dave Barr Award, for leadership and innovation in health and safety.
Her current focus is helping leaders understand complexity and systems, so they can make better integrated decisions to act. She now combines her technical and management background with her training and experience as a Cognitive-Edge® practitioner and COTB® coach, to support leaders. Custom services include coaching, workshops, and narrative mapping.
